Arrecife information
LOCODE: ESACE
Arrecife serves as the vibrant capital city of Lanzarote within Spain's Canary Island archipelago. Positioned on the island's eastern coastline, the port lies just one hundred twenty-five kilometres off the northern coast of Africa. It functions as Lanzarote's principal maritime facility and stands as the second busiest passenger port across the entire Canary Islands. Cruise vessels dock primarily at the modern terminal of La Boca de Puerto Naos, offering convenient proximity to the city center compared to the outer commercial berths.
Historical records trace the settlement back to the fifteenth century, when it originated as a humble fishing village sheltered behind dark volcanic reefs that guarded against pirate raids. By the late sixteenth century, the community expanded rapidly to provide housing and warehouses supporting growing transatlantic trade. The first local church was consecrated around this time to honor San Ginés, the patron saint of the city. The name Arrecife itself derives directly from the Spanish word for reef, reflecting the rocky formations protecting the local shoreline.
Today, the city blends urban charm with seamless access to Lanzarote's dramatic volcanic interior. The historic San Ginés quarter wraps around a shimmering lagoon where traditional houses feature bright aquamarine doors and window frames mirrored in the water. Nearby, Playa del Reducto offers soft sandy beaches framed by palm trees and excellent coastal snorkeling. Pedestrian shopping hubs like Calle León y Castillo feature local craft boutiques, fashion stores, and vibrant street markets.
The island enjoys a warm, arid climate with abundant sunshine year-round. Geologically, Lanzarote ranks as the oldest of the Canary Islands, with its striking landscape shaped by volcanic activity. Many travelers venture inland to explore Timanfaya National Park, a protected region comprised entirely of rugged, otherworldly volcanic terrain.
