Cadiz information

LOCODE: ESCAD

Sitting on the southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Cádiz serves as a picturesque port of call and the principal gateway to Seville. Two cruise terminals welcome visitors right at the waterfront, both offering restrooms and free Wi-Fi. The nearby Alfonso XIII pier provides local snacks, souvenir stalls, and tourist information just a five minute stroll from the historic city centre.

Originally established by the Phoenicians as a trading post, Cádiz stands proudly as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. Its golden age arrived during the 18th century when sandbars choked off Seville, making Cádiz mainland Spain's main harbor with a virtual trade monopoly on the Americas. That prosperous era birthed many of the grand buildings lining the streets today, and Christopher Columbus even chose the bustling port to set sail on his famous second and fourth voyages.

The old town is a joy to navigate on foot, squeezed onto a narrow strip of land hemmed in entirely by the sea. Wandering through the maze of narrow streets reveals tall Moorish style houses with flower decked balconies, tucked away shops, and lively tapas bars. The city skyline is anchored by the striking baroque and neoclassical Cathedral with its glowing yellow dome, constructed during the height of its maritime wealth. Nearby, the Tavira Tower once helped merchants watch incoming cargo ships and now rewards visitors who climb its 173 steps with panoramic views, while the ancient Roman theatre unearthed in 1980 shares tales of the 10,000 spectators it once welcomed.

Local life revolves deeply around excellent food and wine traditions. Fresh seafood served right by the beach ranks among the finest in Spain, and plates of fried fish paired with local wine are a staple at nearly every turn. Plazas buzz with energy as locals enjoy fresh churros, and being right at the heart of Spain's sherry region means rich wine culture flows through every meal.

With mild temperatures gracing the streets year round, from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius in summer down to 10 to 17 degrees in winter, the gentle rhythm of flamenco music and the relaxed atmosphere make Cádiz a wonderful place for slow exploration. Docked along the sunny shores of this ancient city, you can track your sailing on The Cruise Globe to see your ship's precise route toward Andalusia.
