About Capri Island
Capri Island sits in the Mediterranean's Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento Peninsula, in Italy's Campania region. Cruise ships dock at Marina Grande, the island's main port, and Capri serves as a port of call rather than a turnaround port, visited briefly on longer Mediterranean voyages that often combine the island with stops along the Amalfi Coast.
The island itself is small and mountainous. Capri Town, the principal settlement, is home to around 12,200 residents and covers roughly 4 square miles. From Marina Grande, a funicular cable railway climbs the steep terrain up to the town centre, where narrow streets open onto piazzas lined with cafes and boutiques. To the west, the commune of Anacapri sits high on the hills, quieter and more residential than its neighbour, and from there a chairlift carries visitors up to Monte Solaro, the island's highest point at 589 metres, with sweeping views across the bay.
The coastline is dramatic. Among the island's most striking features are the Faraglioni, towering limestone sea stacks rising from the water, and the Belvedere of Tragara, a scenic clifftop promenade popular for sunset views. The island is also home to the Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Grotto, one of the Mediterranean's most celebrated natural sights, where sunlight filtering through an underwater cavity gives the water its glowing blue colour. Ruins of Imperial Roman villas are scattered across the landscape, remnants of the island's history as a retreat for Roman emperors.
Capri has long carried a reputation for style and elegance, and today its mix of historic sites, coastal beauty and boutique shopping draws visitors year-round. Regular ferry services connect Capri with Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi and other nearby ports, making it a natural jumping-off point for exploring the wider Campania coast.
