Cartagena information

LOCODE: ESCAR

Cartagena rests along the Mediterranean coastline of southeastern Iberia within the Region of Murcia, Spain, nestled inside a deep, naturally protected harbor. Serving primarily as a rich port of call on Western Mediterranean cruise itineraries, ships dock in the port's Marina area right at the edge of the city. Because the terminal sits just a ten-minute walk from downtown, travelers can easily venture ashore on foot to explore the destination without needing complicated local transportation.

The port boasts a remarkable, layered heritage spanning thousands of years. Founded around 227 BC by the Barcids of Ancient Carthage as Qart-Hadast, the settlement later became Carthago Nova under Roman rule, serving as the capital of Hispania Carthaginensis. Dramatic rocky promontories crowned by historic forts guard the bay, while the historic old town holds Carthaginian castle ruins and ancient city walls. A standout attraction is the magnificent Roman Theatre, constructed in the first century AD and hidden from view until its rediscovery in 1987. Visitors enter through a fascinating subterranean museum running beneath a palace and a church before reaching the reconstructed theater itself.

Beyond its ancient ruins, Cartagena features late nineteenth-century Modernist architecture and vibrant pedestrian avenues, including the blue-marble-tiled Calle Mayor. The waterfront hosts the unique National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, highlighting the city's enduring maritime identity. Since the eighteenth century, Cartagena has served as the capital of the Spanish Mediterranean fleet and remains an active naval base today, giving the town an unpretentious, authentic character. While wandering the historic center, travelers can browse the Santa Florentina market for local hams, cheeses, and olive oil, or savor fresh Mediterranean seafood, red prawns from the Mar Menor lagoon, and local fig bread. Most shops close between 2 pm and 5 pm for afternoon siesta.

Have you sailed past the fort-topped promontories into the sheltered harbor of Cartagena? Log this Mediterranean journey on your account on The Cruise Globe to see your actual route.
