Castries information
LOCODE: LCCAS
Castries serves as the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, functioning primarily as a port of call where cruise ships dock at either Pointe Seraphine on the north side of the harbour or La Place Carenage on the south. Built largely on reclaimed land and laid out in a neat grid pattern, the city is remarkably walkable, offering visitors an easy stroll from the cruise terminals straight into the vibrant heart of town for a morning of independent exploration.
Originally established by the French in 1650 under the name Carénage, referring to the practice of beaching ships for maintenance, the settlement was later renamed in 1756 to honor a prominent French naval minister. This deep-rooted European heritage endures through local colonial-style architecture and flavorful fusion cuisine, while the capital proudly claims international fame as the birthplace of two Nobel laureates, poet Derek Walcott and economist Arthur Lewis.
Within town, travelers can explore the massive Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, pause for people-watching around Derek Walcott Square, or browse stalls of fresh tropical produce and handmade island crafts at the bustling Castries Market. Just up the winding slopes of Morne Fortune, Fort Charlotte offers sweeping panoramic views of the entire harbour, featuring historic military remnants standing quietly alongside a modern community college campus. Outstanding duty-free shopping facilities are also readily available right at both port terminals for those looking to pick up a local keepsake.
Venturing beyond the immediate city limits reveals Saint Lucia's breathtaking tropical landscape and dramatic topography. The iconic Pitons rise dramatically from the sea as twin pyramid-like mountains recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, while Sulphur Springs allows visitors to experience the world-famous drive-in volcano further south. Further north near Rodney Bay, Reduit Beach provides pristine golden sands and crystal-clear waters for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving under the warm Caribbean sun.
