About Constanta
Constanta sits on the western coast of the Black Sea in Romania, 179 nautical miles from the Bosphorus Strait and 85 nautical miles from the mouth of the Danube River. Ships dock at the Passenger Pier, about 1 km from the harbour entrance and roughly 1.5 km from the city centre, a walk of around 20 minutes. Constanta serves mostly as a port of call rather than a turnaround port, visited mainly by superyachts and smaller luxury ships carrying up to around 1,000 passengers.
The city carries millennia of history beneath its modern surface. Founded as the ancient Greek colony of Tomis in the 6th century BC, it began as a trading post between Greeks and local peoples. The Roman poet Ovid was exiled here, and the city later took the name Constanta in honour of Emperor Constantine I. Little is documented about the centuries between the Roman departure and the late Middle Ages, though by the 14th and 15th centuries it had become an important port for Genoese traders.
Today the waterfront rewards a stroll. The Black Sea promenade runs from the Edwardian era Casino to the Genoese Lighthouse. Piata Ovidiu, or Ovid Square, holds a statue of the exiled poet alongside the remains of a Roman building with striking mosaics still intact. The Casino itself, built in 1909 in the Art Nouveau style by architect Daniel Renard, stands just steps from where ships dock.
Nearby lies the Danube Delta, Europe's second largest wetland and a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the world's largest reed bed and an extraordinary range of plant and animal life. From Constanta, travellers can also reach Histria, an ancient Greek colony founded around 630 BC and considered the oldest urban settlement on Romanian soil. Closer to the city, Mamaia is the region's best known seaside resort, just 5 miles from the centre, with a five mile beach strung along a narrow spit between a lake and the sea.
