Corfu Island information
LOCODE: GRCFU
Corfu is one of the premier Ionian Islands in western Greece, situated at the northwestern corner of the country. The port is frequently included in Adriatic Sea cruise itineraries as well as popular routes connecting Italy and Greece. Ships dock along the eastern coast at the Neo Limani, or New Port, which functions as both the primary cruise terminal and the local ferry hub. The historic Old Town is accessible from the piers via a twenty to thirty-minute walk covering about three kilometres, or travelers can utilize convenient shuttle services operating directly from the terminal gates.
The island carries a rich and layered history that continues to define its distinct architectural and cultural character. From medieval times into the seventeenth century, Corfu remained under the control of the Republic of Venice, successfully repelling Ottoman forces through multiple sieges to become one of the most heavily fortified strongholds in Europe. Two grand Venetian castles enclose the capital city, earning it official recognition as a kastropolis, or castle city, and leading to the designation of the Old Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
Exploring the winding streets reveals the enduring legacy of Venetian rule through narrow cobblestone alleys and distinct Italianate architecture. Beyond the town, the natural landscape is dominated by over four million olive trees, earning Corfu the beloved nickname of the green island. The region enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate featuring hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.
Local culinary traditions highlight the island's unique position at a historic cultural crossroads. Pastitsada, a slow-cooked beef or rooster dish served with thick pasta in a spiced tomato sauce, stands out as a signature delicacy, alongside local kumquat liqueurs and freshly pressed olive oil. Visitors looking to relax can easily access nearby coastal spots such as the pebble beach of Kontokali or the sandy shores of Ipsos.
