Cozumel information
LOCODE: MXCZM
Cozumel is a Caribbean island off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. It is one of the world's busiest cruise destinations and serves mainly as a port of call for ships visiting the Western Caribbean. Cruise passengers arrive at one of three main terminals on the island's western coast, Puerta Maya, Punta Langosta and the International Pier, all within easy reach of San Miguel, Cozumel's largest town.
The island has a long and fascinating history. Its name comes from the Mayan word "Cuzami", meaning "Island of the Swallows". Cozumel was once an important place of pilgrimage for the Maya, particularly for women travelling to honor the goddess Ix Chel. Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva arrived on the island in 1518, marking the beginning of European contact. Today, Cozumel's cultural importance is recognized through its designation as a Pueblo Mágico, celebrating its history and traditions.
Best known for its clear turquoise waters and spectacular coral reefs. The island forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world, and the surrounding waters are home to more than 1,000 marine species. Diving and snorkelling are among the most popular activities, with famous sites such as Palancar Reef attracting visitors eager to explore colourful coral formations, tropical fish and other marine life.
Away from the shoreline, Cozumel offers a mix of natural beauty and archaeological sites. San Gervasio, the island's most important Maya ruins, provides a glimpse into its ancient past and can be reached in around half an hour from the cruise terminals. Much of the island remains undeveloped, allowing native wildlife to thrive. Chankanaab and Punta Sur are popular parks where visitors can enjoy beaches, nature trails, swimming and excellent coastal views.
The local cuisine combines flavours from Maya heritage and the Yucatán Peninsula. Fresh seafood is widely available, while traditional dishes such as cochinita pibil remain local favourites. San Miguel's Mercado Municipal is a good place to sample authentic street food, browse fresh produce and discover everyday island life. Visitors will also find shops selling silver jewelry, locally farmed pearls and handcrafted souvenirs.
