About Dikili
Dikili is a municipality and district of İzmir Province in Turkey, sitting about 120 kilometres north of İzmir on the Aegean shoreline. It serves as a port of call on Mediterranean cruises, used mainly for access to nearby historical sites, and is picturesque both along its coast and inland, making it a popular summer resort for Turkish and international travellers alike.
The chief draw for cruise passengers is Pergamon, an archaeological site about 26 kilometres east of the cruise port. The ancient city was the capital of the Pergamon Kingdom, ruled by the Attalid dynasty from 281 to 133 BC, and was once counted among the great centres of learning and culture in the ancient Greek world. Among its notable remaining structures are a Hellenistic theatre with 10,000 seats, the Sanctuary of Trajan, the Sanctuary of Athena, a library, royal palaces, and a Roman baths complex.
The landscape around Dikili itself has plenty to offer too. A crater lake sits in Merdivenli village, ancient caverns lie in Demirtaş and Deliktaş, and pine forests stretch toward the Madra Stream. Thermal springs can be found in Nebiler, Bademli and Kocaoba, and there are beaches at Bademli and Denizköy, popular with visitors looking to combine sightseeing with time on the sand. The climate is hot summer Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, moderately wet winters.
The town carries architectural interest of its own. The Merkez Mosque, built in 1789, is a rare example of wooden construction assembled without a single nail. Nearby lies Çandarlı, the notable township built on the site of ancient Pitane, along with the still unexplored ruins of the ancient Greek city of Atarneus. Dikili's town centre looks out across the water toward the Greek island of Lesbos, a view that draws its own share of curious visitors.
