Floreana Island information
Floreana Island is a southern island in Ecuador's Galápagos Archipelago, celebrated for its unique wildlife and legendary maritime history. Operating as an exclusive shore excursion stop on Galápagos expedition cruises, the island does not feature a traditional pier; instead, vessels anchor offshore while tender boats and zodiacs transport passengers to landing sites such as Post Office Bay and Punta Cormorant. This remote island offers a captivating blend of volcanic landscapes, pristine sandy beaches, and enduring historical intrigue.
The island gained fame in the 19th century as a vital watering stop for passing whaling ships, who established the famous Post Office Bay barrel back in 1793. Seafarers left homebound letters inside this wooden barrel for homeward-bound ships to collect and deliver, a historic postal tradition that continuing cruise passengers actively maintain today. Floreana also holds a dramatic human history marked by early 20th-century German homesteaders, whose settlement at Asilo de la Paz remains a popular inland sightseeing stop for visitors exploring the rugged interior.
Excursions focus on snorkeling adventures, historical site visits, and guided wildlife observation walks. Snorkelers and divers explore Devil's Crown, an eroded underwater volcanic cone teeming with reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish. On land, guided walks across Punta Cormorant lead past sparkling green olivine crystal beaches to a brackish lagoon where American flamingos, white-cheeked pintails, and sea turtles nest, accompanied by barking Galápagos sea lions along the shore.
Expedition vessels serve fresh Galápagos ceviche, grilled mahi-mahi, yucca croquettes, plantain empanadas, and tropical passionfruit juices.
History buffs, wildlife enthusiasts, and Galápagos expedition cruisers will find this southern island unforgettable for its historic mail barrel, sea turtle nesting beaches, and vibrant marine life.
