Geiranger information

LOCODE: NOGNR

Geiranger is a picturesque tourist village nestled in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county in western Norway. Situated in Stranda Municipality at the very end of the magnificent Geirangerfjorden, a branch of the larger Storfjorden, the village rests approximately 65 miles (110 km) from the coastal city of Ålesund. Operating primarily as a celebrated port of call on Norwegian fjord itineraries, this quiet community of 250 permanent residents welcomes several hundred thousand visitors each summer.

Cruise ships visiting the fjord usually anchor in the calm bay and transport passengers ashore via tender boats. However, the port also features the innovative Seawalk, an articulated floating pier built in 2013 that stretches 236 meters on ten pontoons. This floating walkway can accommodate up to 4,000 disembarking passengers per hour and allows one cruise vessel to dock directly near the village center.

The breathtaking setting remains the destination's primary draw, with the Geirangerfjord area holding UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005. Framed by steep mountain peaks that keep the fjord basin virtually free from wind, the landscape was carved by ancient glaciers over thousands of years. As ships navigate the fjord, travelers can admire iconic cascades such as the Seven Sisters waterfall tumbling directly opposite The Suitor waterfall, alongside historic cliffside farms that recall the region's agricultural roots.

Ashore, exploring the village is straightforward and convenient. The port sits at the foot of the settlement, within easy walking distance of local restaurants, gift shops, and transport connections. Shuttle buses transport visitors up winding mountain roads to famous panoramic viewpoints overlooking the fjord. Historic landmarks in town include a charming wooden church dating back to 1842.

For active travelers, outdoor excursions offer spectacular vistas across the region. The famous Geiranger Skywalk at the summit of Mount Dalsnibba provides unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks and the Blåbreen glacier. In town and along the waterfront, local menus feature fresh Norwegian seafood, tender reindeer and elk, and sweet or savory dishes prepared with summer berries like cloudberries, raspberries, and lingonberries.
