Halong Bay information

Halong Bay sits in northeastern Vietnam's Quang Ninh province, located roughly 110 kilometres from the capital city of Hanoi. Operating primarily as an iconic Asian port of call on regional itineraries, cruise ships dock at Cai Lan, a deep-water port that serves as the primary gateway for local boat excursions. The bay is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring an estimated 1,969 limestone islands and islets spread across 900 square miles of sea. Most of these emerald-topped islands are uninhabited, standing as striking limestone pillars rising directly from the water.

The name Halong translates locally to descending dragon, reflecting ancient folklore that compares the island pillars to a dragon's back. Sailing among these towering karst formations aboard traditional wooden junk boats allows visitors to explore hidden coves and ancient sea caves up close. On the island of Bo Hon, Surprise Cave features thousands of colorful stalactites hanging from tall ceilings like chandeliers. Nearby, Thien Cung Cave, also known as Heavenly Palace Cave, stands out as one of the most beautiful caverns in the bay, displaying unusual stalagmites and rock formations.

Active shore activities include sea kayaking between limestone cliffs and riding the two-time Guinness World Record-holding Queen Telpher cable car for sweeping aerial views over the bay. Ha Long City itself features vibrant local markets and restaurants, serving as a convenient base before setting out toward Cat Ba Island and smaller surrounding islets. The landscape is particularly dramatic in early morning or late afternoon light, when the changing sun highlights the natural contrast between light, stone, and water.

Local markets and waterfront restaurants in Ha Long City offer visiting travelers convenient spots to enjoy regional meals and fresh seafood.

Halong Bay appeals to nature lovers, cave explorers, and Vietnam cruise travelers seeking dramatic karst scenery, ancient caverns, and mythic coastal landscapes. Relive your voyage visiting Halong Bay by adding it to your profile on The Cruise Globe.
