Lisbon information
LOCODE: PTLIS
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the westernmost capital city in mainland Europe. Situated on the northern bank of the River Tagus, where the broad estuary opens towards the Atlantic Ocean, it is one of Europe's most popular cruise destinations. Lisbon is visited both as a turnaround port and as a port of call, with its cruise terminals located close to the historic city centre, making it easy for passengers to explore on foot.
The port has two main cruise terminals along with an additional cruise quay, all conveniently positioned on the riverfront near many of Lisbon's best known sights. Good transport links and walkable streets allow visitors to reach the city's historic neighbourhoods with ease. Thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream, Lisbon enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, making it an appealing destination in every season.
Built across seven hills, Lisbon is famous for its dramatic viewpoints, colourful buildings and rich maritime history. The hilltop São Jorge Castle overlooks the city, while the riverside district of Belém celebrates Portugal's Age of Exploration. It was from here that explorers including Vasco da Gama set sail on voyages that helped shape world history. The magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands nearby as one of the country's finest examples of Manueline architecture.
Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, offers a maze of narrow streets, historic houses and small squares that survived the devastating earthquake of 1755. Traditional buildings decorated with colourful ceramic tiles and wrought iron balconies give the area its distinctive character. One of the best ways to discover the city is aboard the famous Tram 28, which winds through several historic districts, including Graça, Alfama and Baixa, passing many of Lisbon's most recognisable landmarks.
Portuguese cuisine is another highlight of any visit. Fresh seafood is a local speciality, with grilled sardines and hearty fish soups appearing on menus across the city. No visit is complete without trying a pastel de nata, the famous Portuguese custard tart that originated in Lisbon. In the evening, the sound of traditional Fado music drifts from restaurants and small taverns, particularly in Alfama, creating an atmosphere that perfectly reflects the city's rich culture, seafaring heritage and timeless charm.
