Liverpool information
LOCODE: GBLIV
Liverpool sits along the famous banks of the River Mersey in northwest England, offering a dramatic waterfront entrance steeped in maritime tradition. The city's cruise operations center around a modern floating terminal located directly at Pier Head, an innovative design that allows large ocean liners to dock easily without navigating the inner enclosed dock system. Officially opened in 2007 when the Queen Elizabeth 2 berthed at the pier, the terminal has functioned as a full turnaround homeport since 2012 while also welcoming visiting liners on longer British Isles itineraries. Because the terminal sits right beside the vibrant downtown core, passengers can step directly off the ship and begin exploring the city on foot.
The port carries one of the world's most distinguished passenger shipping legacies, serving as the birthplace of Cunard and a crucial nexus of innovation during the Industrial Revolution. Scheduled ocean passenger travel began here as early as 1819 with the SS Savannah, followed by regular transatlantic passenger services in 1840. By the late nineteenth century, Liverpool had risen to become the second most important port in the British Empire and the premier hub for transatlantic sea travel. Historic landmarks line the harbour, including the renowned "Three Graces"—the Royal Liver Building, the Port of Liverpool Building, and the Cunard Building, which once served as Cunard’s official headquarters.
A short walk from the berth brings travelers to the Royal Albert Dock. Opened in 1846 and built using revolutionary cast iron, brick, and stone, it holds the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the United Kingdom, now filled with lively museums, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants. Music enthusiasts can follow the historic footsteps of The Beatles at iconic sites such as Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, and The Cavern Club, while architecture lovers can marvel at Liverpool Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals on earth.
