Marseille information
LOCODE: FRMRS
Marseille operates as France's leading cruise port and the country's largest seaport, standing prominently as one of the busiest maritime hubs in the Mediterranean. The port features cruise terminals located in the northern sector of the harbor about nine kilometers from the city center, functioning primarily as a major turnaround port where many itineraries begin and end, alongside welcoming ships that call in briefly between destinations.
Established around 600 BC as the Greek colony of Massalia by settlers arriving from Phocaea, the city boasts a heritage stretching back millennia. The Old Port, locally known as the Vieux Port, has served as the natural harbor since antiquity and remains a vibrant gathering place today. While the harbor suffered severe devastation during World War II when occupying forces dynamited portions of the historic core and demolished the famous aerial ferry, the city rebuilt itself while retaining echoes of its past, visible in landmarks like St Victor's Abbey, one of the oldest Christian worship sites in the nation.
Modern Marseille invites extensive exploration across distinct neighborhoods and elevated viewpoints. The Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde stands as a striking 19th-century Romano-Byzantine church perched at the city's highest point, offering panoramic vistas. Nearby, the Le Panier neighborhood presents a maze of narrow streets filled with artisan workshops, local boutiques, and residential alleyways, while the active Vieux Port hosts a busy yacht marina, regional tour boat departures, and a traditional open-air fish market.
The local climate features classic Mediterranean weather patterns characterized by mild winters and hot summers, with the city enjoying an impressive three hundred days of sunshine annually. Beyond maritime sailings, the port also acts as a primary departure gateway for river cruises heading into Provence and Burgundy.
