Piraeus-Athens information
LOCODE: GRPIR
Piraeus is the main seaport of Athens, located on the Saronic Gulf southwest of the Greek capital. As the largest port in Greece, it serves both as a major homeport for cruise departures and arrivals and as a popular port of call for cruises around the Eastern Mediterranean. Its close connection to Athens makes it the gateway for visitors wanting to explore one of the world's most historic cities before or after their cruise.
The port has three dedicated cruise terminals. Terminal A is the main terminal and is within walking distance of central Piraeus. Terminal B accommodates some of the largest cruise ships visiting the port, while Terminal C provides additional capacity for busy cruise days. Getting around is straightforward, with Piraeus Metro Station located close to the port and offering direct connections to central Athens through Lines 1 and 3, making independent sightseeing simple for cruise passengers.
Piraeus has served as the harbour of Athens since ancient times. In the fifth century BC, the statesman Themistocles recognised the importance of its natural harbours and oversaw the construction of fortifications that helped establish Piraeus as the naval and commercial centre of ancient Athens. The port has remained central to Greek maritime life ever since, even serving as accommodation for visitors during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games when several cruise ships were used as floating hotels.
For many visitors, the highlight of a call to Piraeus is the opportunity to explore Athens. The Acropolis and the Parthenon rise above the city and rank among the most famous ancient monuments in the world. The nearby Plaka district offers narrow streets filled with traditional cafés, shops and historic buildings, providing a wonderful place to experience everyday Greek life. Ferries also depart regularly from Piraeus to islands across the Saronic Gulf, the Cyclades, Crete and other parts of the Aegean.
Closer to the port, Mikrolimano is a charming waterfront harbour lined with seafood restaurants and cafés overlooking the water. The surrounding streets of Piraeus feature attractive neoclassical buildings, museums and lively squares that are ideal for a leisurely stroll. Whether exploring ancient landmarks or enjoying the atmosphere of the waterfront, Piraeus offers an excellent introduction to the history, culture and hospitality of Greece.
