Rangiroa Atoll information
Rangiroa sits in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, located about 355 kilometers northeast of Tahiti. Functioning as a scenic port of call, the destination features an elliptical lagoon extending 80 kilometers in length and up to 32 kilometers in width. Cruise ships anchor off Tiputa on the northeastern coast, tendering passengers directly ashore to explore the surrounding white sand islets and quiet coastal villages. The two primary settlements, Avatoru and Tiputa, sit across from each other across Tiputa Pass.
The surrounding waters create exceptional conditions for marine life and water sports. Tiputa Pass is internationally recognized as a premier scuba diving location, where clear, shallow waters draw divers from around the globe. During the austral summer months from December to March, visitors frequently encounter great hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and diverse marine species in the pass. Outdoor activities center around the lagoon, offering opportunities for snorkeling, boat excursions to remote islets, as well as diving.
Beyond its natural beauty, Rangiroa maintains distinct local industries that shape the island's culture and economy. The atoll supports extensive black pearl farming across hundreds of acres of lagoon water, highlighted by operations like Gauguin's Pearl along with a dedicated pearl farming school and research center. Additionally, Rangiroa hosts unique coral atoll vineyards growing alongside coconut palms, producing two wine harvests each year.
With a population of roughly 2,500 residents spread across nearly 80 square kilometers, life on the atoll remains relaxed and unhurried. Avatoru serves as the administrative center, featuring local churches, civic buildings, and quiet residential streets that offer an authentic taste of South Pacific island living.
Rangiroa appeals to scuba divers, nature lovers, and South Pacific cruisers seeking pristine lagoons, authentic pearl farms, and tranquil island charm. Add your past or upcoming cruise to Rangiroa to your account on The Cruise Globe.
