About Reine
Reine is a picturesque fishing village on the island of Moskenesøya in Norway's Lofoten archipelago. Positioned well above the Arctic Circle and about 300 kilometres southwest of Tromsø, this tiny settlement is home to under 300 year-round residents. Because of the shallow waters in the fjord, ships anchor offshore in the bay and transport guests to the pier using tender boats, making it an idyllic port of call along Northern Europe and Arctic voyages rather than a turnaround port.
Serving as a vibrant trading post since 1743, Reine is renowned as one of the best-preserved historic communities in the region. The village itself remains essentially unchanged over the centuries. Traditional wooden fishing buildings, painted in shades of faded red, green, and ochre, line the waterfront beneath steep granite mountains that rise directly from the water. The heart of the village features a white wooden church built in 1890, alongside local cultural hubs like the Reine Centre of Arts and Culture, which showcases prominent works by Norwegian artists.

Craggy granite peaks emerge dramatically from the Reinefjord, creating a stunning backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. A stone staircase constructed by Sherpas between 2016 and 2019 offers an accessible trek up Reinebringen, rewarding hikers with sweeping vistas over the entire village and surrounding waterways.
For over a thousand years, these cold Arctic waters have anchored a world-famous winter cod fishery, especially when the fish migrate south from the Barents Sea to spawn. Reine's role in this ancient trade is visible everywhere you look, with drying racks for stockfish dotting the shoreline. A small local museum documents this rich maritime heritage, demonstrating how active fishing traditions continue to thrive alongside modern travel.
