Rhodes Island information
LOCODE: GRRHO
Rhodes Island sits in the southeastern Aegean Sea just off the coast of Turkey, reigning as the largest of Greece's Dodecanese islands. Cruise ships dock at a dedicated pier on the northern tip of the island, serving as a primary maritime gateway for both passenger liners and regional ferries. The port offers an exceptionally convenient setup for cruisers, positioning ships just a short five-minute walk from the edge of the historic Old Town. Travelers stepping ashore can comfortably reach the nearest gate in the ancient city walls within ten minutes, making independent exploration simple and direct.
The main highlight of the island is its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, recognized as one of the best-preserved medieval strongholds in Europe. Built by the Knights Hospitaller, the citadel is entirely enclosed within an impressive four-kilometer stone wall. Inside, atmospheric cobbled lanes and picturesque terraced tavernas wind between remarkable historic structures. Key attractions include the fourteenth-century Palace of the Grand Masters, the Hospital of the Knights of St John, the pink-domed Mosque of Suleyman, and the Byzantine Museum. Rhodes is also famously celebrated as the home of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a giant statue that once stood at the harbor before an ancient earthquake destroyed it.
Beyond the citadel, the island provides a variety of day excursions under a warm, sunny Mediterranean climate with pleasant average temperatures around 70°F (20.9°C). An hour's drive south leads to Lindos, a scenic village defined by whitewashed houses clinging to a steep coastal hillside. Inland, nature enthusiasts visiting between May and July can explore the peaceful Valley of Butterflies, where thousands of Jersey tiger moths flock to the oriental sweetgum trees to reproduce. Dining along the quays highlights classic Mediterranean fare, featuring freshly grilled octopus, rich moussaka, and sweet, honey-soaked baklava.
