Rotterdam information
LOCODE: NLRTM
Rotterdam functions as a major European cruise departure port located in the Netherlands, positioned within the South Holland province at the mouth of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. Serving as a traditional homeport for Holland America Line, it acts as a primary gateway to the Norwegian fjords, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean, and the British Isles. The Port of Rotterdam stands proudly as the largest seaport in Europe and the largest outside of Asia, connected directly to the North Sea via the Nieuwe Waterweg canal completed in 1872. Cruise passengers arrive directly into a bustling working port where container ships and river barges navigate alongside modern leisure vessels.
The city boasts a rich history dating back to 1270 when a dam was constructed along the Rotte, earning official city rights in 1340. Heavily damaged during World War II, Rotterdam underwent extensive rebuilding to emerge as a vibrant multicultural metropolis that uniquely blends pre-war industrial heritage with striking contemporary architecture. A central landmark within the renovated docklands is the Hotel New York, housed inside the former Art Deco headquarters of the Holland America Line.
Stepping off the ship, visitors find themselves within minutes of Delfshaven, a peaceful historic neighborhood that miraculously survived wartime destruction. This scenic district is crisscrossed with tranquil canals, traditional brown cafes, historic breweries, and the Pelgrimskerk where early voyagers once prayed. Crossing the nearby Erasmus Bridge leads straight into a lively urban center featuring contemporary attractions like Foodhallen, a converted warehouse offering international street food and dining terraces. Furthermore, world-famous destinations such as the historic windmills of Kinderdijk and the blue-and-white pottery workshops of Delft are just a short excursion away.
