Santiago de Cuba information
Santiago de Cuba sits on the southeastern coast of the island, on a bay connected to the Caribbean Sea, and ranks as Cuba's second most important city after Havana. The port lies roughly 540 miles southeast of Havana and serves as a significant seaport, with ships typically calling here as part of longer Caribbean itineraries that explore the island's history and culture.
The city carries the weight of centuries. Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar founded Santiago de Cuba on 25 July 1515, and from 1522 until 1589 it served as the capital of the Spanish colony of Cuba. On 1 January 1959, Fidel Castro proclaimed the victory of the Cuban Revolution from a balcony of the city hall. The setting is dramatic, with the Sierra Maestra mountain range rising sharply around the city on land.
Culture runs deep through Santiago de Cuba. Some of the country's most celebrated musicians, including Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa, all of whom appeared in the film Buena Vista Social Club, were born in the city or the villages nearby. The Bacardi brand traces its roots here to 1862, and its museum now houses the family's extensive art collection. The San Pedro de la Roca citadel holds UNESCO World Heritage status, recognized as one of the most complete and best preserved examples of Spanish American military architecture, built on Italian Renaissance design principles.
The city sits at the foot of the bay, hemmed in by the Sierra Maestra, under a hot and humid climate typical of the region. Steep streets descend toward the water, and the landscape blends urban life with greenery and marine views at every turn.
