Bimini Islands information
Bimini is the westernmost district of the Bahamas, sitting just 50 miles due east of Miami and 130 miles northwest of Nassau. As the closest Bahamian destination to the mainland United States, it provides an ideal, short ocean getaway for ships sailing from Florida ports through the Caribbean and Bahamas.
Cruise liners dock at the Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port, located within a premium beachfront resort complex featuring a private pier, yacht marina, and dedicated beach amenities. To make getting around simple and convenient, a complimentary shuttle bus runs every 10 to 15 minutes between the cruise terminal and nearby Fisherman's Village.
Comprising several cays and three primary islands (North, South, and East Bimini), the archipelago offers a quiet, small-scale island escape quite distinct from busier Caribbean ports of call. Positioned directly at the eastern edge of the Gulf Stream, Bimini boasts a rich deep-sea fishing legacy dating back to the 1930s.
Author Ernest Hemingway famously spent years fishing these waters, drawing inspiration from his offshore marlin battles to write The Old Man and the Sea. During American Prohibition, the islands also served as a favorite haven for the rum-running trade, earning a unique place in maritime lore.
Ashore, visitors can explore local shops, craft stalls, and casual eateries along King's Highway on North Bimini, or visit the market located just south of the pier. Mystery also surrounds the island's intriguing landmarks, most notably the Bimini Road, a controversial underwater stone formation that continues to fascinate divers and historians alike.
Water activities remain the highlight of any shore visit. Snorkelers and scuba divers can explore vibrant coral reefs, deep limestone blue holes, and the legendary shipwreck of the S.S. Sapona. Visitors can also interact with friendly stingrays at Honeymoon Harbour or relax on soft white-sand beaches while sampling fresh island seafood.
