Cartagena information
LOCODE: COCTG
Cartagena, known since colonial times as Cartagena de Indias, occupies a stunning coastal position on the northern coast of Colombia along the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Frequently featured on Southern Caribbean itineraries departing from Florida, the port welcomes arriving vessels at the modern Cartagena de Indias Cruise Terminal, situated within the residential Manga neighborhood roughly four kilometers from the historic city center. The facility provides excellent passenger amenities, including tourist information kiosks, comfortable seating areas, high-speed Wi-Fi, and bustling shops offering fine Colombian coffee and world-renowned emerald gems.
Founded on June 1, 1533, the destination ranks as one of South America's oldest and most historically significant colonial cities. Historically, it served as a vital maritime link in the Spanish trade route, functioning as a primary port for exporting silver and anchoring trade across the West Indies, which unfortunately made it a frequent target for Caribbean pirate attacks. To defend against these threats, massive stone fortifications and ramparts were constructed around the settlement. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage designated walled city enchants visitors with its intricate maze of cobblestone streets, brightly colored colonial facades, and lively public plazas.
Architectural and natural wonders abound near the port, highlighted by the imposing Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, recognized as the largest Spanish fortress ever built in the New World. Just offshore, the pristine Rosario Islands beckon travelers with crystal-clear turquoise waters and thriving coral reefs ideal for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing on white sand beaches. Within the historic center, the compact urban core can be easily explored on foot, offering a delightful sensory experience from end to end.
Local gastronomy blends rich coastal flavors with traditional Caribbean influences, treating visitors to delicious regional specialties like crispy fried plantains, savory coconut rice, and fresh shrimp ceviche served alongside the sea.
