Oranjestad Aruba information
LOCODE: AWORJ
Oranjestad is the capital and largest town of Aruba, a Dutch island territory, with a population around 35,000. The port sits on the island's western coast, and the cruise terminal can handle up to 5 vessels at a time.
The city has a distinctive character rooted in its history. Fort Zoutman was built around 1796, and Oranjestad was established around it; the town was initially known as "Bay of Horses town" for its horse breeding trade with Curaçao, and was renamed in the 1820s after the first king of the Netherlands, William I. The port is known for colorful Dutch Colonial 'gingerbread' houses and historic sites like Fort Zoutman.
The setting is what makes Oranjestad especially appealing to cruise passengers. Oranjestad is one of the most walkable cruise ports in the Caribbean, typically taking about 5 to 10 minutes to walk from the pier to downtown. Aruba's most popular shopping and dining establishments are located about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the docking pier.
Climate here is reliably sunny. Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt, ensuring consistently good weather. Aruba's weather is mostly warm and sunny throughout the year with low humidity and average temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27C).
Just a short walk from the port, Oranjestad's shopping district features jewelry, perfume, designer outlets, Dutch delicacies, and Aruban aloe products. Modern amenities include an outdoor shopping mall at Royal Plaza, as well as dining and drinking venues along Main Street and Main Square.
The beaches nearby offer the island's most immediate appeal. Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Arashi Beach are among the closest to the port, with Eagle Beach renowned for its beauty, Palm Beach offering watersports, and Arashi Beach known for snorkeling. Oranjestad is a popular scuba diving destination, with snorkeling, swimming, and diving available at various white sand beaches.
Beyond the waterfront, there is inland variety. Arikok National Park covers nearly 20 percent of Aruba and offers diverse landscapes including desert terrain, caves and rock formations, and the Natural Pool, a secluded swimming area protected by volcanic rock.
Aruba's culture is a vibrant blend of Dutch, Spanish, Arawak, African, and Caribbean influences, reflected in the unique Papiamento language. The local food reflects this mix, with Argentine meat, Venezuelan empanadas and arepas, Dutch cheese, Caribbean pumpkin soup, and gumbo alongside pan bati, a pancake made from wheat and corn flour.
