Dubrovnik information
LOCODE: HRDBV
Dubrovnik is a premier Adriatic Sea cruise port and city located in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, standing as one of Europe's most historically significant and popular travel destinations. The port primarily serves as a vibrant stopover on longer Mediterranean voyages, though certain itineraries utilize it as a turnaround port.
The main cruise facility is situated in Gruž, located in the modern district of Dubrovnik roughly two miles northwest of the historic center. While larger vessels dock at Gruz, passengers can easily reach the city gates via port shuttles, public buses, or local taxis available right outside the terminal. Within the monumental city walls, vehicular traffic is entirely prohibited, making walking the exclusive mode of exploration.
The historic Old Town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's origins date back to the seventh century when refugees fleeing the ancient settlement of Epidaurum founded Ragusa. Between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, Dubrovnik flourished as an independent maritime republic known as Ragusa, balancing diplomatic relations with various regional powers while maintaining self-governance. This rich, layered history shapes the magnificent architecture seen throughout the city today.
Massive medieval ramparts encircle the entire Old Town, and walking along the stone battlements offers breathtaking views over terracotta rooftops and the azure Adriatic. The Stradun, a wide limestone-paved boulevard, serves as the main pedestrian artery connecting the western and eastern gates. Along its length stand architectural treasures such as the Rector's Palace, Onofrio's Fountain, and the thirteenth-century Franciscan Monastery featuring a serene cloister.
Local gastronomy highlights traditional Dalmatian and Adriatic flavors. Fresh fish, shellfish, and grilled seafood feature prominently on menus alongside regional specialties like pašticada, a slow-cooked marinated beef dish served with gnocchi, and black squid ink risotto. Dining establishments cluster densely throughout the winding limestone lanes and along the historic harborside.
