Korcula Island Croatia information
LOCODE: HRKOR
Korcula rests peacefully as a magnificent Croatian island nestled within the sparkling Adriatic Sea, encompassing an area of two hundred seventy-nine square kilometres and measuring forty-seven kilometres long by an average of eight kilometres wide just off the picturesque Dalmatian coast. Cruise ships dock securely at the historic port town located on the island's southeastern coast, serving primarily as an enchanting port of call where the main passenger terminal centers directly upon the ancient walled settlement.
Encircled by robust medieval defensive walls where building outside was historically forbidden until the eighteenth century, the old city features streets artfully arranged in a herringbone pattern that provides excellent protection against strong winds while guarding the narrow sound separating the island from the mainland. The magnificent Cathedral of St. Mark was constructed by talented local masters between the fifteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries, showcasing an exquisite altarpiece painted by Tintoretto and a stunning portal crafted by Bonino da Milano alongside a wooden drawbridge replaced in eighteen sixty-three.
After becoming an integral part of the Byzantine Empire during the sixth century, the island later flourished under the powerful Venetian Republic as a vital naval port and primary timber supplier for Venice's legendary wooden fleet. Cultural life thrives today through celebrated international events like the annual Korkyra Baroque Festival held every September, showcasing leading musical ensembles and talented international soloists specializing in classical baroque compositions.
The picturesque island scenery is richly defined by extensive pine forests and celebrated for producing Grk, an exclusive white wine cultivated exclusively on local vineyard soils due to restricted regional production limits. Local meteorological records indicate diverse temperature extremes ranging from a record summer high of thirty-nine degrees Celsius or one hundred two degrees Fahrenheit down to a winter low of minus four point five degrees Celsius or twenty-four degrees Fahrenheit.
