Molde information
LOCODE: NOMOL
Molde is a charming town and the administrative seat of Molde Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, located within the traditional Romsdal district. It sits gracefully on the Romsdal Peninsula, surrounded by the picturesque waters of the Fannefjord and Moldefjord. Functioning mainly as a regular port of call rather than a turnaround port, Molde features a small and compact cruise terminal. The terminal offers the distinct advantage of being located just a short, convenient walk from the vibrant town center, where arriving passengers can easily explore local shops, cozy cafes, and regional attractions.
Affectionately nicknamed The Town of Roses, the settlement originated as a busy shipping port for timber in the late 1500s before receiving its official royal charter in 1742. Although devastating German air-raids during the spring of 1940 destroyed roughly two-thirds of the town, Molde successfully rebuilt using modern architectural styles while thoughtfully preserving select historic wooden structures. Visitors stepping ashore can explore Molde Cathedral, a striking mid-century concrete structure featuring soaring roofs, magnificent stained-glass windows, and ornate rosemaled interiors, or journey to the extensive open-air Romsdal Museum to experience regional heritage dating back centuries.
The majestic surrounding mountains and deep fjords define the ultimate visitor experience, famously showcasing a breathtaking panorama of over two hundred snow-clad mountain peaks. A favorite excursion for active travelers involves the scenic hike or drive up to the Varden viewpoint, which rewards climbers with sweeping vistas stretching as far as the distant fishing village of Ona. Beyond the immediate municipal borders, extraordinary regional drives beckon adventure seekers, including the engineering marvel of the Atlantic Road and the legendary Trollstigen, a breathtaking tourist road that winds up a sheer vertical mountainside through eleven dramatic hairpin bends.
Local restaurants round out the port visit by serving traditional Norwegian fare, including fresh fjord trout, tender reindeer dishes, and artisanal cheeses, all enjoyed under a temperate maritime climate. Have you ever admired the sweeping fjord panoramas from the summit of the Varden viewpoint during a cruise?
