Toulon information

LOCODE: FRTLN

Toulon is a storied maritime city situated along the French Riviera in southeastern France, sitting on the Mediterranean coast at the eastern edge of the Gulf of Lion. The cruise port is located directly within the bustling city center, accommodating up to three smaller-sized vessels at its piers, while additional ships anchor in the sheltered bay. The passenger terminal also handles regional ferry routes to Corsica, Sardinia, and Elba, while luxury ships and superyachts often berth across the bay at La Seyne-sur-Mer. Serving primarily as a port of call, Toulon provides a quintessential French Riviera stop.

The city's deep relationship with the sea dates back to 1494, when King Charles VIII established a naval shipyard in its exceptionally well-protected natural harbor. Today, Toulon remains France's principal naval base and the home port of the flagship aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Visitors strolling along the waterfront can view the historic docks of the Porte de l'Arsenal, constructed in 1738, standing side by side with modern naval ships, sleek yachts, and colorful traditional fishing boats.

Rising sharply above the city is Mont Faron, where a scenic six-minute cable car ride carries visitors up to the summit for breathtaking panoramic views across the Mediterranean coastline. Down in the city, the historic old town features narrow pedestrian streets, quiet squares, and the vibrant Rue des Arts district lined with galleries and murals. Architectural highlights include the grand Opera House in Place Victor Hugo, adorned with impressive columns and classic statues representing Tragedy and Comedy.

Toulon enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean climate with abundant year-round sunshine and exceptionally mild winters. Food lovers can walk down the lively Cours Lafayette, an expansive pedestrian market street offering fresh figs, local olives, and regional goat cheese. For those venturing beyond the city center, local passenger ferries run to the idyllic Île de Porquerolles to explore pristine beaches and secluded coves, while wine enthusiasts can take short inland trips to visit the famous vineyards of Provence.
