Trondheim information
LOCODE: NOTRD
Trondheim is a historic coastal city situated in central Norway, positioned at the mouth of the River Nid where it flows into the sheltered waters of the Trondheim Fjord. Stretching 81 miles (130 km) inland through Trøndelag county, this grand fjord provides calm waters that make the port a favored stop on longer Scandinavian cruise itineraries. Trondheim also serves as a vital calling point along Norway's renowned Coastal Express shipping route, which regularly connects maritime settlements from Bergen all the way to Kirkenes.
Founded in 997 AD by King Olav Tryggvason, the city holds a profound place in Norwegian history. At the center of town stands Nidaros Cathedral, a breathtaking 12th-century Gothic sanctuary that stands as the largest medieval building in Scandinavia and the historic coronation site for Norway's monarchs. Much of the old town rests on an island formation framed by the river and fjord, where cobblestone streets, colorful wooden storehouses, and an open-air folk-culture museum preserve the region's enduring heritage.
Visiting cruise passengers experience an exceptionally warm welcome from the local community. Residents in traditional costumes often greet arriving guests at the pier with complimentary city maps, while maiden ship calls are celebrated with live musical performances and treats of locally made chocolates. A short distance from the waterfront, the peaceful Bymarka nature reserve offers forested hiking trails and quiet lakes for outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its northerly location, the city enjoys a surprisingly mild climate with comfortable summers and coastal winter temperatures that frequently remain above freezing.
Before returning to the ship, guests can stroll through the lively pedestrian quarters or enjoy fresh seafood and regional specialties at welcoming waterfront cafes overlooking the harbor.
